×Philadelphia City Hall
The Philadelphia City Hall is one of the largest historic structures in America, in excess of 1,000,000 gross square feet. For years, VITETTA, a DRG company, has worked to preserve it, from the exterior facade and roof replacements to the major courts facility and other significant interior work. The City of Philadelphia asked VITETTA to complete a study of the roof leaks and make recommendations to stop them. The results of our study showed that the building’s four-acre roof system had completely failed. Roof flashing and membranes had reached their terminal stage and could no longer be just patched. Significant leaks were also occurring at the building’s monumental slate and cast iron mansard roofs.
In response, VITETTA developed a $50 million, three phase, exterior envelope project to meet the City’s budget and its goal to fund a project that included a mix of infrastructure and restoration improvements. VITETTA directed and oversaw unique and important building forensics, architectural and restoration work for masonry cleaning and restoration. VITETTA also provided overall design team project management, reviewing with consultants their proposed designs of the new flat roof system, and cast iron repairs and restoration at the monumental mansard hip covers, dormers and cresting. The project was bid to four multiple prime contracts (general construction, electrical, plumbing and roofing) and the bids came in below the estimate. The newly finished work is stunning as the scaffolding comes down to reveal the glistening white marble of the French Second Empire style facades that has not been visible for over a hundred years.
