As part of the Free Library of Philadelphia’s 21st Century Library initiative, *Building Inspiration*, Vitetta, a DRG Company (VITETTA), provided programming and design services supporting the rehabilitation of all 56 neighborhood libraries. The initiative established a facility enhancement framework and prototypical design elements to support a new era of library services, including building expansion, enhanced interior fit-out, and improved accessibility across the system. The first four library branches—Logan, Lovett, Lillian Marrero, and Tacony—were completed in 2017. Work at these locations included architectural design and the development of the new Digital Library @ The Free Library of Philadelphia, which expanded services to include instructional space, community gathering areas described as a “living room,” access to emerging technologies, and maker space programming. A key design objective was to provide full accessibility within historic structures more than 100 years old while implementing a prototypical, customer-focused library service model. Design solutions varied based on the constraints of each site; however, each project incorporated intuitive and physically accessible strategies, including ramps and building additions, to provide barrier-free access throughout the facility and serve the entire community. All design work was subject to review and approval by the Philadelphia Art Commission. In addition, the Logan and Lillian Marrero Libraries—both listed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places—required review and approval by the Philadelphia Historical Commission. Each library was designed to accommodate the Free Library’s updated service plan and furniture prototype using an open sightline layout. A central feature of each branch is the “Living Room,” which establishes a welcoming zone for seating, reading, and quiet conversation. Furniture systems were designed to be movable or demountable, including glass partitions, to support flexible use. The work rehabilitated and highlighted historic architectural features while discreetly modernizing building systems and controls to improve energy efficiency.
