This project relocates existing, underserved programming spaces into modern classrooms, creating a more accessible and effective learning environment for students and faculty. Designed by DRG Architects, the $54 million, 151,794-square-foot, four-story addition and renovation were commissioned by the New York City School Construction Authority (NYC SCA) to enhance and expand the school’s capacity. The design harmonizes the old with the new, featuring pre-cast concrete and variegated terra-cotta tiles that complement the original brickwork. A welcoming lobby connects the new and existing buildings, while the facade’s playful window arrangement adds a creative touch. Expansive angular windows in the lobby and cafeteria flood the interiors with natural light. The third floor sets back from the lower facade to lighten the perceived weight of the building and respect the scale of the neighborhood. The ground level includes essential community spaces, while the upper floors house specialized areas for art and music education, science classrooms, general classrooms, and administrative spaces.
